The Social Security Check is NOT in the Mail

The Social Security Check is NOT in the Mail

September 30, 2025

If you're one of the nearly 400,000 individuals receiving a paper check from Social Security - hopefully you've made plans for a change beginning today.

In March President Donald Trump signed an executive order to stop the distribution of paper checks for Social Security recipients on September 30, 2025.  The number of people still receiving paper checks makes up less than one percent of all recipients (more than 70 million people currently receive a Social Security payment).

The reason for the change, as noted in the executive order, was to improve the time it takes for recipients to receive their benefits, reduce the potential for lost or stolen checks in the mail and the cost-savings of sending electronic payments instead of mailing.

Instead of paper checks, Social Security recipients will receive a direct deposit into their bank account or have a prepaid debit card provided.

If you have not set-up your new payment option, you can visit the Social Security website and access your account.

The next big news on Social Security is scheduled for October 15, when the annual COLA (cost of living adjustment) is expected to be announced.
